With our trip to Iceland just over two weeks away we have finally completed our planned itinerary and activities that we intend to do on our trip. Its safe to say that we are uber excited about this trip (I personally have never looked forward more to a trip than this one).
There is a lot of talk on twitter about Iceland and each time a new post appears with #Iceland tag I get really excited. We hope to see the Northern lights whilst we were there but I was unsure if we were too early, however several photos have appeared on Twitetr showing that the phenomenon is indeed happening this time of yer so fingers crossed we will see them. That said if we don’t see them I know without a shadow of a doubt that this trip is going to be truly amazing.
The trip will include a lot of photography and we will be shooting videos and time lapse videos along the way. I would like to come back with enough imagery and video so that I can write an interactive visual book that will be freely available on iTunes. As with all of our itinerary’s we try to keep it as flexible as possible simply because we take each step as they come.
Day 1 (October 11th)
We will arrive in Iceland via EasyJet at 8:40 in the morning. After getting our baggage and hire car we will drive to the Blue Lagoon. We will spend a couple of hours here relaxing after our flight. We will move on afterwards and drive to Vik along the main highway. We have no specific stops along the way so we will stop at anything we see that takes our fancy. We will most likely stop off at Skógafoss and the black beach.
Hotel Volcano will be our hotel for two nights whilst we are in this part of Iceland. This small hotel took our fancy primarily because of its location and it looks like a cozy little hotel.
Day 2 (October 12th)
Our first activity of the trip will happen on this day. We have a planned glacier walk that has been provided by the hotel. They will take us to the glacier in a super jeep from the hotel which will be a lot of fun. We will be setting off at around 8am and will be walking on the glacier for about an hour and a half. The trip will last around 3 hours in total.
Once we get back to the hotel we will jump into our own jeep and drive to Jökulsárlón to experience the glacier lagoon. If time permits we will also take a wander around Skaftafell National Park
Day 3 (October 13th)
We will leave Vik and begin our drive to Gullfoss. This day has been left free of any set activities so we can drive around the Golden Circle and simply stop off again whenever we see anything that takes our fancy. The famous Gullfoss falls and Geysir will be seen during this day and we will no doubt stop off at many other beautiful locations including Thingvellir National Park.
We have a 1 night stay planned at Hotel Gullfoss. Again this hotel looks quaint and its remote location excites us. If the Northern Lights do decide to put a display on then a short drive will take us to pitch black skies.
Day 4 (October 14th)
Our next planned activity is booked for this day. We have an adrenaline fueled trip on Snow Mobiles. This activity really excites us because when we were in Egypt we went on ATV’s and they were fun but to be on Snow Mobiles shooting across the snow seems so much more fun! This activity has been booked through Mountaineers.is who specialise in snowmobiles and super jeeps.
The rest of the day we will continue to explore the golden circle area before moving on to Reykjavik. We have quite an interesting evening planned in Reykjavik because we have arranged to meet up with fellow bloggers A Six Pack of Stories (@a6packofstories) from Texas and Tiny Iceland (@TinyIceland) at the Lebowski Bar in Reykjavik, I’m sure more bars will follow . Its going to be a lot of fun as we have never met up with any other travel bloggers before. After the last three days of remote quaint hotels we have decided to live it up whilst in Reykjavik and have decided to opt for a room at the Center Hotel Thingholt for 2 nights.
Day 5 (Ocotber 15th)
The final day of our trip will start off by being picked up at the hotel by Arctic Adventures for a half day trip snorkeling at Silfra where the continents of Europe and America meet. The waters here look pristine and we are looking forward to experiencing an activity that seems quite extreme. We would have opted to go diving but we haven’t dived for a few years (yes we have become warm water wusses) so we would have to do a refresher course. Also we have never dived in dry suits before, therefore it seemed easier to do the snorkeling trip.
At the end of the trip we will return to Reykjavik where we will wander around and take in this small city and its beautiful sites.
Day 6 (October 16th)
The only thing we can do on this day is return to the airport for our early flight back to the UK. It will be a sad day I am sure but we will be leaving with some great memories and hopefully some fantastic photos.
I would like to say a big thanks to Tiny Iceland for providing us with all the above photos and for all their advise for our trip. Also we would like to thank Iceland is Hot for their tips when we were initially looking for ideas. You guys rock!
What places do you think we should visit on our road trip in-between activities? Are there any hidden gems off the main road?
